Benoni is a large suburb situated alongside the N12 Highway, and forms part of the Greater Johannesburg region. In 2000, Benoni became part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
In 1887, gold was discovered in the area, leading to the official founding of Benoni in 1904.
